Cinzio Cavallarin - Homage to Rosai

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

In his work dedicated to Ottone Rosai, Cinzio Cavallarin adopts the Florentine master's distinctive style. The landscape becomes pared down, devoid of detail, in a composition focused on creating a balanced interplay of forms: we are in the midst of a return to order and an exaltation of plastic values. Rosai's reference was also Quattrocento Florence, as we understand from the harmony of the colors, the subtle brown hues that characterize this quotation from Cavallarin. The exaltation of plastic and chromatic values ​​transfigures the landscape into a frozen atmosphere. It is an aesthetic that possesses alienating overtones, while remaining within the realm of phenomenal reality, and for this reason, it can be associated with the pictorial movement known as Magic Realism.

Cinzio Cavallarin was born in 1942 in Chioggia, but lives and works in Prato. His artistic production draws on various influences from the contemporary avant-garde, from Abstraction to Cubism, from Informalism to Expressionism.
