Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the female figure is an expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the female figure has also been a central figure in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
This work is part of a series of paintings in which the painter Carmelo Fertitta has conducted a thorough study of the female figure, using a highly interesting expressive formula based on a bright red monochrome. In this chromatic unity, the female subject takes shape through subtle passages of black. The technical quality of the execution is so high that, in a perfectly natural way, the volumes emerge from the red with clear plasticity. The surfaces are smooth, and the quality of the touch also allows for a precise, naturalistic rendering of the facial features.
Carmelo Fertitta was born in 1911 in Gioiosa Marea and passed away in Palermo in 1995. After obtaining his teaching qualification, he served as headmaster in Merano. During the war, he served as an officer in Sardinia, where he met his wife Maria. After the war, he joined the Italian postal administration, working in Macerata, Ancona, and Palermo. His favorite subjects were the landscapes of his native land.
