Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the equestrian monument, or the man on horseback, has very ancient origins. It dates back to the classical world, the earliest example of which is the "Rampin Knight," and it had a fundamental political importance for Roman art. Generally, these are sculptures in the round, but there are also cases where this subject appears on painted supports. The theme of the man on horseback has pervaded the entire history of art, not only Western art, and has become a subject of research for contemporary artists such as Marino Marini, Arturo Martini, and Aligi Sassu.
Horses and riders are one of Carlo Novelli's favorite subjects, which he interprets through his highly personal research. The figures undergo a remarkable process of abstraction, reducing them to pure forms and colors. However, the composition presents a complex intersection of lines and planes that recalls a Cubist-derived conception of space, although the use of a bold color palette and the strong dynamism expressed bring it closer to Futurism.
Carlo Novelli was born in Ponsacco in 1939 and passed away in Pontedera in 2010. He graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, but his true artistic development began in 1959, when he moved to Paris. His artistic language has always sought pure forms and pure colors in representation. In addition to painting, he also devoted himself to engraving and sculpture. Among his favorite subjects are figures of horses and riders.
