Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as a subject in themselves began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers began to appear not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also becomes a way of interpreting reality.
As we can see in this painting, the language used by painter Carlo Mihalich is based on a profound process of abstraction of phenomenal reality. The subject is resolved in an almost geometric series of shapes and colors that have more to do with an emotional and spiritual world. It is primarily color that provides this key to interpretation, adopting hues that completely depart from a naturalistic vision.
Carlo Mihalich is a painter from Gorizia, an exile in Fiume. He graduated from the Art Institute of Venice and began his artistic career in 1955. He has held several solo and group exhibitions in many Italian cities and abroad (Toronto, Paris, Melbourne, Stockholm). In 1985, he donated one of his works to Pope John Paul II in Marghera.
