Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a constant aspiration for painters. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance; then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century; up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism. The "seascape" in particular is a recurring theme among artists. First, for the lyricism implicit in views overlooking the sea or in romantic images of small harbors. Second, because the depiction of aquatic surfaces allows painters to give free rein to their chromatic flair, thanks to refined interplays of reflections and reverberations.
Carlo Domenici is a prominent representative of the Labronica School, and his pictorial language is therefore distinguished by the prevalence of color over line and a synthetic style of application that represents a reinterpretation of the Tuscan Macchiaioli tradition. In his works, we can appreciate how his use of light, always through the tonal values of color, is highly scenographic. As in Macchiaioli paintings, the light pervades the entire scene, clear and crisp, while the artist masterfully captures every reflection on the surface of the water.
Carlo Domenici was born in Livorno in 1897 and passed away in Portoferraio in 1981. He began his career with numerous small panels painted with macchia (macchia). In 1924, he participated in important exhibitions in Milan and then at the Rome Quadrennial. In 1926, he was present at the South American Exhibition and the Venice Biennale. Abroad, he exhibited his works in Tokyo and Manila. He frequently visited the island of Elba, where he found inspiration for his landscapes.
