Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the Centauromachy (battle of centaurs) dates back to classical times. Numerous examples of it can be found in Greco-Roman bas-reliefs. As a classical iconographic theme, it has naturally been revived over the centuries, especially during the Renaissance (a famous bas-relief by Michelangelo, housed in the Casa Buonarroti in Florence, is a prime example). Themes inspired by men on horseback, the centauromachy, and the equestrian world in general have pervaded the entire history of art, not just Western art, and have become a focus of research for contemporary artists such as Marino Marini, Arturo Martini, and Aligi Sassu. Indeed, they offer artists the opportunity to create subjects that simultaneously express anatomical beauty, physical strength, and dynamism.
In this work, part of a pair of centauromachies, the artist Bruno Martini draws on a distinctly classical conception of artistic creation. Indeed, beyond the overtly classical subject matter, the work's unified conception also draws on the same spirit. The entire composition, though crowded, is governed by a harmonious arrangement of elements and individual movements, based on symmetries and contrasts. Even the anatomical conception of the centaur's figure is clearly based on a classical ideal of beauty, simultaneously powerful and proportionate. Furthermore, tonally, the work's unity is perfect, immersed in a coherent atmosphere of burnished hues. Thus, the unbridled dynamism of a battle between centaurs is exalted by Bruno Martini according to an elegant model of formal perfection that also draws on the painter's technical excellence. The figures are crafted with a keen sense of naturalistic rendering. However, Martini uses a very quick and synthetic brushstroke to enhance the movement and dynamism of the scene.
Bruno Martini has a very classical conception of painting. He is an artist gifted with an extraordinary drawing technique that expresses his sense of volume and a perfect naturalistic rendering.
