Description of the work
Description of the work
The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.
Beppe Ciardi is one of the most important and prominent representatives of a pictorial movement that spread throughout Italy between the late 19th and early 20th centuries. This school of painting is still closely tied to academicism, both in terms of its subjects and its overall approach, which is extremely classical. However, in terms of its pictorial style, it is a movement that looks to the contemporary, bringing to fruition the reflections on Impressionism and Macchiaiolism. In this canvas by Ciardi, color plays a fundamental role in constructing the image through the application of large, dense patches of color. Ciardi, in particular, consistently exploits variations in tone, bathes the entire scene in a clear, sunlight while simultaneously ensuring a coherent atmospheric unity.
Giuseppe Ciardi, known as Beppe, was a painter born in Venice in 1875 and died in Quinto di Treviso in 1932. He came from a family of painters, son of Guglielmo and brother of Emma. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts under Ettore Tito. He specialized in vedutism and landscape painting, developing his own post-Impressionist language. In Tuscany, he came into contact with the post-Macchiaioli movement. He participated in important exhibitions outside Italy, including in Munich in 1901. In 1912, he participated in the Venice Biennale.
