Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography we are presented with is that of the Madonna and Child. Her image spread from 431 after the Council of Ephesus, reaffirming the Virgin's position as the mother of God and not just of Jesus. Her iconography reached the West thanks to Byzantine art, which over the centuries saw a loosening of the rigid frontal representation to embrace a more intimate figure, expressing affection between mother and child. The Madonna and Child has undergone various alterations in its representation: the two can be depicted enthroned, seated on the ground, accompanied by saints, reading a book, while the mother breastfeeds her child, with the mother praying before the Child, in a garden, with Saint Joseph. The work's style is highly reminiscent of the typical style of a Venetian artist active in the second half of the 1440s, Carlo Crivelli. He typically depicted the Madonna in half-length, leaning over a balustrade or balcony, holding the Child on her lap or on a ledge. The figures are accompanied by various symbols that most likely relate to the Child's future, recalling the Passion of Christ. The Madonna, in her red cloak, gently watches over the Child; the colors they wear symbolize maternal love and compassion. Of great interest is the architectural landscape behind the figures, which enhances the scene and places the subjects in an urban context, even if it is idealized. The artist as a whole is placed in the wake of Renaissance painting of the Italian school, certainly oriented towards a Nordic art with Southern hints, especially with regards to the use of colour.
