The work has a marked expressionist vocation, which tends to emphasize the expression of emotions. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its moods to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of the figures, through a very nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a violent color palette. These characteristics are found in the historical avant-garde movements of expressionism: Fauvism and the Die Brucke movement in Germany.

This work demonstrates how Augusto Murer's sculptural nature also emerges in his graphic works. In these figures, the artist employs a process of synthesis that reduces them to the essential, yet this process allows for a sculptural chiaroscuro, as if the figures were roughly hewn from stone. Murer emphasizes a few facial features that capture the expressiveness of a subject's face. The rest of the composition is determined by a system of sinuous lines and a curvilinear rhythm. The expressiveness of the composition also plays on the prevalence of white or opaque colors, interspersed with diluted patches of brighter hues that engage with the subjects.

Augusto Murer, born in Falcade in 1922 and died in Padua in 1985, was one of the most important Italian sculptors of the second half of the twentieth century. His national recognition came in 1953, following an exhibition in Milan that received the praise of critic Orio Vergani. His work often addressed themes of civic engagement, drawn from his experience as a partisan, but also explored human existence.
