Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of this painting is part of the Vedutismo movement. Vedutismo is a genre born in the 18th century and developed primarily in Venice. Vedutismo painters aimed to represent a landscape objectively and scientifically, placing it as the protagonist of the work. There are basically two types of vedute: the realistic one, taken exactly from reality, and the "capriccio," a fanciful view invented by the painter.
Although a monochrome charcoal drawing, the execution partially reflects the typical characteristics of Vedutismo. First, the setting is scenographic; the diagonal view framing the church of San Simeon Piccolo lends a theatrical feel to the entire work. But above all, the execution method is consistent with Vedutismo: the artist uses a quick, cursive stroke, roughly delineating the details and allowing their recomposition to occur in the viewer's eye. The artist of this drawing manages to soften the forms in the atmosphere, constructing the objects with a thin, black line that delineates the contours and, subsequently, softening the volumes with a soft hatching.
From an analysis of the style—a cursive, rapid stroke—and the subject—the church of San Simeone Piccolo—the artist can be defined as a follower of the Venetian tradition of Vedutismo. We are therefore faced with a painter with a solid academic background, which provided him with a remarkable technique that allowed him to achieve a perfect naturalistic rendering.
