For this reason, objective representations of plants and animals have always been necessary, and this became especially true in the 18th and 19th centuries, a period when scientific research was most widespread. It is worth recalling how the studies of Linnaeus and Darwin, in particular, greatly stimulated the study and classification of animal and plant species.

The woodcuts were produced by a printing house active in the 16th century that illustrated the Discourses of Pietro Andrea Mattioli, one of the most important herbal works of the 16th century.
