Description of the work
Description of the work
The visual arts have always had a close connection with the world of biology, both animal and plant. Graphic representation of the species studied has always been fundamental, both for classification and for scientific analysis. For this reason, objective representations of plants and animals have always been necessary, and this became especially true in the 18th and 19th centuries, a period when scientific research was most widespread. It is worth recalling how the studies of Linnaeus and Darwin, in particular, greatly stimulated the study and classification of animal and plant species.
The prints serve the purpose of classifying plant species. Formally, since they are images for scientific purposes, they cannot be filtered by any artistic vision and must rely on a completely objective representation. Their beauty, therefore, lies in the scientific precision with which the subject is rendered. The drawing demonstrates extraordinary technical skill in capturing the image in every minute detail with a noble didactic intent. In this specific case, the hand-colored coloring adds further value to this precious scientific and cultural testimony.
The woodcuts were produced by a printing house active in the 16th century that illustrated the Discourses of Pietro Andrea Mattioli, one of the most important herbal works of the 16th century.
