Description of the work
Description of the work
The work features all the traditional iconographic attributes of Saint John of Nepomuk. He was a Bohemian canon and preacher in Prague during the reign of Wenceslas, who had him drowned in the Vltava River. The saint is usually depicted wearing his canonical habit, a cassock with a surplice. Another recurring element is the crucifix that the saint gazes upon in adoration. But the principal iconographic attribute of Saint John of Nepomuk, which we also find in this work, is the halo with the five stars that appeared when he suffered martyrdom by drowning.
The composition focuses entirely on the figure of the saint, which occupies a large portion of the canvas. The execution primarily reflects the pursuit of naturalism typical of the 17th century. The saint's torso twists freely and naturally, accompanied by the voluminous folds of his robe, which impart a rotating motion to the work. The artist has paid particular attention to the rendering of the hands, which are somewhat elongated, and the facial features. The technique used is a glazed application that allows for the soft shading of the shadows.
It's possible that the work was created by a 17th-century Baroque artist. This is suggested by the compositional rhythm, based on a rotating movement, the ample volume of the saint's figure, and the predominantly dark colors, typical of the period. The saint's expression of pathetic pietism and a certain stereotype in his facial features suggest an artist from some local school.
