Description of the work
Description of the work
The colors pink, blue, yellow, black, and white were applied using drippings, giving the work a dynamic and fluid look. This technique creates an intriguing optical effect, allowing the images to reveal themselves only when viewed from a distance.
Within the work, two historically contrasting elements emerge, accentuated by the choice of colors and the technique employed. At the center of the composition stands the Mother Church of Gela, depicted in sober and symbolic tones. The church, the symbol and cathedral of the city, is steeped in longstanding traditions and folklore, including references to its ancient local slang name, "matrici."
In front of the Mother Church, the bronze statue of "A fimmina nura" (The Nude Woman) emerges with an ethereal and nuanced character. The figure of a thriving nude woman, representing Demeter, the Greek goddess of the harvest, blends in with the surrounding colors. In 1954, this statue generated mixed reviews among the citizens of Gela, especially because it was located in front of a church. The work captures the moment when the images of the two elements are revealed only from afar, emphasizing the contrast between the sacred and the profane.
The visual effect and the use of intense colors invite the viewer to reflect on the complexity of the historical and cultural relationships between these two elements, making the work not only an artistic expression but also an engaging visual experience.
