Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
In this lithograph, which has a more sketchy feel, we can appreciate the formal elegance of master Antonio Gigante. The figures are composed with a sinuous black line that, with just a few strokes, manages to characterize the subjects with a certain physiognomic precision. The drawing also seeks out the plastic qualities of the figures, especially in the complex drapery of the main figure. A quick hatching is also used here, useful for distributing the shadows and further highlighting the subjects' volumes.
Antonio Gigante was born in Lecce in 1935. He studied in Florence at the Academy of Fine Arts with Primo Conti and Giuseppe Viviani. Returning to Lecce in 1960, he became a professor of Costume History at the Istituto Professionale Femminile Statale (Female Professional Institute). In addition to his work as a painter in Lecce, Gigante is also known for organizing exhibitions and cultural events. His other interests include film and photography. Since 1974, he has lived in Brescia, where he has taught Painting at the Caravaggio Art School. He has exhibited his work in numerous shows throughout Italy.
