Description of the work
Description of the work
One of the most important concepts in the history of artistic production has been that of "mimesis," or the human need to imitate and reproduce nature, that which surrounds us. Nature refers to everything that can be grasped through the five senses—in short, phenomenal reality. Figurative art trends can be considered those that, in the representation of the world, adhere most closely to this objective and sensorial dimension, leaving little room for abstraction and subjective interpretation.
In this sculpture, Antonio Bassi demonstrates his skill as a sculptor in achieving a fully naturalistic rendering of the subject. The physiognomic precision that places this sculpture in a realistic context is combined with the intensity of the expression. Furthermore, the vibrant, colorful modeling is linked to Bassi's closeness to the Viennese Secessionist movement.
Antonio Bassi, 1889-1965, a sculptor born in Trani. He trained first in Rome, then in Germany, and finally in Vienna. He was a predominantly classical sculptor, but during his stay in Vienna, he became involved with the Secession movement, which led him to develop a certain expressionist tendency in his work.
