Anchise Picchi - Tuscan Farmer

The painting can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the depiction of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, lacks any significant element. These types of domestic subjects were long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art starting in the 17th century. Only with the development of 19th-century realism did everyday subjects become considered as important as historical or religious ones.

The pictorial style of Livorno-born artist Anchise Picchi typically relies on much more elaborate hatching. In this painting, however, the color is given greater scope to spread out in broad patches, drawing on the Macchiaioli tradition rather than the Impressionists. Light, therefore, is able to permeate the entire scene, diffusing an atmosphere filled with solar warmth. Anchise Picchi was born in Crespina in 1911 and passed away in Collesalvetti in 2007. He trained primarily in Pisa. In Florence, he met Pietro Annigoni. In 1942, after a stay in Greece, he settled in Collesalvetti. In 1956, he opened his own studio in Livorno, becoming one of the leading representatives of the Gruppo Libronico. His career culminated with a retrospective at Palazzo Strozzi in Florence in 1978. Another retrospective of his work was held in Collesalvetti in 2011.
