Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of motherhood is closely linked to the subject of the Madonna and Child. It is probably one of the most popular iconographies in the history of both Western and Eastern art. The Madonna and Child appears since the dawn of medieval painting and remained a constant subject as long as religious themes dominated artistic production (that is, until the 19th century, when themes inspired by everyday life began to be introduced). It is quite common for contemporary artists (as in this case) to treat the iconography of motherhood without directly linking it to the Christian religion, but rather transfiguring it into a realistic vision featuring simple people.
In this drawing, Aligi Sassu creates a thoroughly classical work, both in form and spirit. Formally, there is a certain mimetic intent as the artist creates a depiction of calm and lyrical naturalism. This is reflected in the subjects' physiognomic details and the softness of their expressions. But above all, it is a truly classicist attitude that governs the creation of this work. This attitude is expressed in the pursuit of complete harmony in the composition and the rationality and purity of the characters' plastically defined forms.
Aligi Sassu, born in Milan in 1912 and died in 2000, was a painter and sculptor. His painting efforts focused primarily on the representation of movement and physical strength, which is why the subject of the horse or man on horseback was always congenial to him. In the late 1970s, he and Bruno Munari drafted the pictorial manifesto "Dynamism and Muscular Reform," which called for a return to anti-naturalistic forms in a dynamic sense. Much of his painting, moreover, is inspired by Delacroix and his battles.
