Description of the work
Description of the work
Animal portraits in art have ancient origins, appearing even in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the works of numerous ancient civilizations. It was especially in the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that animal depictions became widespread as true life portraits, both within works of art and in notebooks of drawings and sketches. The presence of animals as subjects in art remained constant until the contemporary era.
Aldo Turchiaro has a special talent for depicting animals, which he interprets with his own distinctive style. Turchiaro's subjects straddle the line between a naturalistic depiction, which leans toward detailed depiction, and a more creative reworking of the subject, evoking a sort of mechanomorphic transformation of the animals. In these two lithographs, the bird and the lizard are composed of metal plates held together by screws and bolts, just as their prey are creatively transformed into technological artifacts. We are thus faced with a process of devitalization of the subject that benefits the composition, allowing Turchiaro to unleash his excellent drawing skills. The execution, in fact, presents a perfect formal appearance, rich in detail, suited to the surrealist-mechanical aesthetic that characterizes these subjects.
Aldo Turchiaro was born in Celico in 1929. He moved to Rome, where he studied under Renato Guttuso. Initially, he also looked to Carrà and De Chirico, but later embraced Expressionist Realism. He participated in the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadrennial, and in 1973 he won the Fiorino Prize in Florence. He is also known as an illustrator, having illustrated books of poetry by Rocco Scotellaro and Márcia Theóphilo.
