Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
From this lithograph, we can appreciate the quality of Aldo Salvadori's artistic language: his exploration of the essence of the people portrayed in his portraits (his favorite genre). Thus, Salvadori's work is one of reduction, leading to the expressionistic subtraction of individual physiognomic features. In this lithograph, everything is resolved by an extremely elegant graphic line that, creating a sinuous and curvilinear rhythm, animates the subject in a composition full of harmony and balance.
Aldo Salvadori was born in Milan in 1905 and died in Bergamo in 2002. He trained first in Florence and then in Paris. For many years, he taught at the Istituto Superiore di Industrie Artistiche in Monza. He exhibited his work at numerous events both in Italy and abroad. He participated in various editions of the Venice Biennale and the Rome Quadriennale. He also taught at the Brera Academy.
