Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this painting certainly has allegorical meanings and can be defined, in some ways, as symbolist precisely because of its allusion to underlying meanings. It is a type of subject that can be traced back to the artistic language of late nineteenth-century painters such as Moreau, Bocklin, or Puvis des Chavannes, who, despite using a substantially figurative language, developed intellectually complex iconographies, full of symbolic and allegorical references.
The painting is a prime example of the artist Aldo Parmigiani's pictorial output. Most of his compositions feature solitary female figures placed at the center of the composition. Formally, Aldo Parmigiani's most striking characteristic is his constant experimentation with brushstrokes. In this case, the artist offers us a highly elaborate pictorial style that seems to seek not only extreme mobility of the subject but also a certain antique, almost fresco-like patina. Chromatically, the colors are consistently Parmigiani's signature, featuring a palette brimming with bright, luminous hues.
Aldo Parmigiani is a Milanese painter born in 1935. He trained under the painter Mossa and at the Castello Sforzesco Art School. He also attended the Cimabue Academy, also in Milan, to study nude painting, and the Urbino Art Institute to specialize in graphics. His exhibition career began in 1960, developing with numerous solo exhibitions both in Italy and abroad. His works are held in numerous private collections, including in the United States.
