Alberto Rossi - Mountain Landscape

Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has always been an artist's aspiration. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the 16th century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

This work is particularly interesting because it demonstrates the versatility of the painter Alberto Rossi, who, for much of his work, adopted a formally perfect, broadly academic style. This painting, however, reveals the Turin artist's openness to more experimental solutions. Indeed, here the form is virtually disintegrated in favor of a more expressive language, reminiscent of a post-Impressionist style. Formally, the work employs an almost crude approach, synthesizing the subjects with a few dense touches of textured color. The chromatic choice of grays and dark greens also reflects this heaviness.

Alberto Rossi was a Turin-born painter born in 1858 and died in 1936. He trained at the Accademia Albertina and, throughout his career, specialized in portraits, landscapes, and genre scenes inspired by the Middle East. Success came when he presented his "Portrait of a Man" at the Turin Exhibition of 1884, then, in 1887, he exhibited five more works in Venice. He was deeply connected to the Eastern world and lived in Egypt from 1891 to 1914. His works are held in many Italian and foreign collections.
