Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on an Informal aesthetic language. The devastation wrought by World War II left a profound mark on Western civilization, which in the visual arts also resulted in an inability to communicate. For some artists, this challenge led to a complete rejection of any visual language, resulting in the birth of Informal Art. The various Informal movements are certainly connected to American Abstract Expressionism, especially with regard to the gestural component, but they go further in their rejection of any figurative element, even geometric. Their research focuses instead on the material from which their works are composed.
Walter Coccetta's style is informal, yet strives to maintain ties to phenomenal reality. Indeed, he begins with Nature, of which we can still discern faint, sparse traces of figuration on the canvas, yet everything is transfigured by the evocative power of gesture and pictorial matter. Thus, the figuration is resolved in layers of color and vibrations that transfigure the artist's perception. This dichotomy between the stratification of matter and the painter's gesture plays a key role in Walter Coccetta's informal art. Thus, compositionally, the work seeks a balance between these two elements, whose expressive power lies in their very hermeticism. Thanks to gesture and stratification, the surfaces of the works thus seem to take on a life of their own, conveying, in their marks and grooves, all the accidentality of reality. Painting definitively emerges from an abstract dimension to become something concrete.
Walter Coccetta, born in 1941, trained at the Brera Academy and then at the Mino da Fiesole Academy in Arezzo. In 1985, he began his exploration of large-scale wood sculptures as a revival of sculpture. In the 1980s, he began receiving recognition throughout Italy and subsequently abroad. His pictorial production is distinguished by a highly original, informal language based on layered materials and agitated painterly gestures.
