Description of the work
Description of the work
Animal figures appear at the dawn of art history, in primitive rock carvings. Interest in depicting animals with anatomical precision and rich detail developed especially in the Middle Ages with the spread of International Gothic. Animals began to appear in works as individual subjects, rather than as a backdrop to the main event, in the modern era, especially from the 18th and 19th centuries.
The style of Croatian artist Vladimir Filakovac can be considered predominantly naturalistic. The painter's primary goal is to achieve a perfect naturalistic rendering, both in the anatomical definition of the subject, but also in the construction of the environment and the interaction between subject and environment. Filokovac achieves these results through a brushwork of rapid, late-Impressionist influence.
Vladimir Filakovac, Croatian painter (Brod na Savi 1892 - Zagreb 1972), trained in Budapest, lived in Vienna and Osijek, and taught at the Academy in Belgrade and, from 1941, in Zagreb. In painting, he continued the tradition of the Munich School with figurative compositions, landscapes, and portraits. He later embarked on a series of post-impressionist works. He devoted himself primarily to the study of animal figures and worked on illustrations and specialized books.
