Description of the work
Description of the work
Flowers as an independent subject began to appear in still lifes, a genre that emerged in the early 17th century. Subsequently, painters, especially the Impressionists, increasingly focused on the floral world, as an extraordinary opportunity to capture vibrant colors and light. Thus, flowers were depicted not only in vases, but also immersed in their natural landscape. While initially a pretext for painters to attempt a photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art, the subject of flowers also became a way of interpreting reality.
Valan's style, in his extensive pictorial output of landscapes, still lifes, and female figures, is distinguished by a perfect blend of naturalistic figuration and an expressionistic rendering of the subject. Indeed, he consistently begins with perceptible reality, which he firmly anchors with a pictorial language that aims to imitate reality. Yet his interpretation is characterized by a strong contemporary sensibility that leads him to seek a more pronounced pictorial synthesis. This occurs primarily through the application of color, which, with a highly accentuated pictorialism, allows the artist to detect profound vibrations in the subject, not only of light but also of existence.
Valan (Valentini Antonio) was born in 1934 in Calvi dell'Umbria, Terni. The artist has participated in numerous exhibitions both in Italy and abroad. He has held shows in cities such as Amsterdam, Paris, New York, Beijing, and in countries such as Syria, Turkey, Greece, France, Belgium, the United States, Australia, and New Zealand. In 1996, a stamp featuring one of his works was issued in Switzerland.
