Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been an artist's aspiration throughout the centuries. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.

The composition is framed in perspective, with the large boat centrally positioned, structuring the entire painting. Maestrucci aims for a naturalistic rendering of the subject and fills the entire scene with a delicate twilight light. The entire color palette is set on nocturnal tones, and the images appear to flicker in an atmosphere of expectation.

Umberto Maestrucci (1897-1952). Initially pursuing a career as a photographer, he later turned his attention to painting, especially landscapes.
