Description of the work
Description of the work
In art history, a clear distinction can often be drawn between figurative and abstract stylistic movements. However, when an artist’s aim is to represent an object that corresponds to phenomenal reality while simultaneously being imbued with hidden, symbolic meanings, this boundary can become blurred. In the case of Nespolo, whose language is shaped by a strong Pop influence, it is the puzzle that deconstructs and reconstructs reality according to an objective process.
In this work, Ugo Nespolo’s desire to transform reality from phenomenal to noumenal is evident. The portion of the world captured by the painter is stripped of its sensory data because the artist wishes to go beyond it, grasping every existential aspect. This leads to a systematic deconstruction of reality that takes into account every possible variable and development. The sensible world is thus transformed into an intricate interplay of planes that reflects its complexity, even in the choice of the color palette. In this triptych, the process is applied—always in a stimulating and aesthetically compelling way—to the representation of three interiors. The lines of the composition blend perfectly with a rationalist geometry that establishes a flawless perspective and divides the spaces. Everything then resolves into an illusionistic interplay of overlapping backgrounds and views that open onto secret corners. The use of color, always characterized by electric, exquisitely Pop tones, is perfect for highlighting Nespolo’s geometric puzzle while fully respecting the tonal coherence of the entire work.
Ugo Nespolo was born in Mosso in 1921. His artistic career was characterized in the 1960s by a strong Pop tendency. He was also involved in conceptual movements, particularly by approaching Arte Povera. His entire artistic production is marked by a certain taste for irony and playfulness. His most famous works present an objective reconstruction of reality through complex interplay of planes and colors.
