Description of the work
Description of the work
The work draws on a pop aesthetic in its use of famous or mass-produced images and their mechanical reworking. Pop Art emerged in the United States in the second half of the 20th century as a result of artists' interest in and critique of the contemporary "consumer society." All expressions of Pop Art presuppose a sort of double bond with the world of consumerism and mass media. On the one hand, the artwork is reduced to a mere consumer product, thanks to the use of advertising language in the works and their serial reproduction through mechanical processes. On the other hand, as in this case, the mass-produced images themselves become works of art, as a more genuine and truthful expression of the new society and thanks to the artist's recontextualization.
In the work of Ugo Nespolo, whose artistic language is strongly influenced by Pop Art, the puzzle is the element used to deconstruct and reconstruct the image through an objective process. The subject is transfigured through an intricate interplay of layers that reflects its complexity even in the choice of color palette. Nespolo's compositions always have a very linear and rigorous progression, and his palette is distinguished by electric and acidic hues. The artist's intention to elevate the mass-media language of advertising or design to an artistic medium is clearly evident. Thus, Nespolo's poetics are always expressed through a captivating composition featuring an intricate rhythm of lines and chromatic zones in the overlapping of figures and decompositions, also reminiscent of Cubism.
Ugo Nespolo was born in Mosso in 1921. His artistic career in the 1960s was characterized by a distinct Pop leaning. He was also involved in conceptual movements, particularly Arte Povera. His entire artistic output is characterized by a taste for irony and fun. His most famous works present an objective reconstruction of reality through complex interplays of planes and colors.
