Description of the work
Description of the work
The “Still Life” genre emerged at the beginning of the 17th century. It consists of the representation of compositions of inanimate subjects, in most cases flowers or fruit. If at the beginning of its history it was an opportunity for painters to try their hand at a naturalistic or photographic reproduction of reality, with contemporary art “Still Life” also becomes a way of interpreting reality. Indeed, as will happen for example in the cubist avant-garde or in Giorgio Morandi, the profound research on objects will be aimed at a conceptual representation, taken beyond the simple sensory data.
The language of the artist Benito Tomezzoli is clearly and deeply expressionist. The subject, in its transposition of reality, undergoes a very high process of synthesis that reduces the forms to their purest essence. Every contingency is eliminated and everything appears flattened on a two-dimensional surface in a powerfully primordial representation. The stroke is often and deliberately coarse and the figures are sketched with a fluid rhythm. In Tomezzoli's compositions, indeed, everything seems alive in a liquid and trembling dimension. Those that shake the objects are existential vibrations, in the most typical expressionist tradition. Consistent with this tradition, Tomezzoli's palette is composed of aggressive, almost violent colors.
Benito Tomezzoli was born in Garda in 1923 and passed away in 2003. A fundamentally expressionist artist, he mainly dealt with popular themes related to life on the shores of the lake. He produced an impressive number of paintings, many of which were exhibited during the retrospective held in Garda in 2004.
