Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always been a central theme in artistic research, both as a setting, as a backdrop, and as a subject itself. The naturalistic depiction of landscape has been a major aspiration for artists of every era. Each historical period has offered its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its depiction: first with an exploration of space, through Brunelleschi's perspective in the early Renaissance, then with atmospheric rendering in the sixteenth century, up until the depiction of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
This landscape by Szabò is essentially executed with a very dense and material pictorial style, deliberately leaving traces on the canvas. A sort of heaviness of earth and humidity is conveyed by the Hungarian painter with his layered color scheme. The painting, however, is very rapid, leaving a sense of immediacy intact in the trees, which, fading into the distance, become increasingly evanescent.
Szabò, pseudonym of Giuseppe Vuerich, was born in Budapest in 1916 and died in 2011 in Centuripe (Enna), where he is buried. He was a renowned landscape painter and, above all, a portraitist. He produced over two thousand works, exhibited in numerous galleries in Italy and abroad: in Florence, Rome, Milan, Amsterdam, Brussels, and Caracas. He was a member of the Tiberian Academy and the World Academy of Artists and Professionals in Rome. He won first prize in the "European Banner of the Arts" awarded by the Academy of Europe in 1984.
