Description of the work
Description of the work
The work has a marked expressionist vocation, which tends to emphasize the expression of emotions. Expressionist art seeks to proclaim its moods to the world and flaunt them with passion. Formally, this translates into a summary rendering of the figures, through a very nervous and animated line, as well as the use of a violent color palette. These characteristics are found in the historical avant-garde movements of expressionism: Fauvism and the Die Brucke movement in Germany.
The work is a prime example of Silvio Loffredo's style, which reworked the hallmarks of historical Expressionism. We see how the figure undergoes an almost brutal process of synthesis, reducing it to its essence. The contours are drawn with a thick black line. On a pictorial level, there is a search for an almost exaggerated gesturality, combined with powerfully textured color.
Silvio Loffredo was an Italian painter born in Paris in 1920 and died in Trebiano in 2013. After his studies, he settled permanently in Florence, where he would spend his entire career. He frequented Ardengo Soffici and Ottone Rosai, and in Austria he met Oskar Kokoschka, who would become his main stylistic influence. He had many important solo exhibitions, including the XXXII Venice Biennale and participated in several editions of the Rome Quadriennale. From 1973 to 1990, he taught painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence. His works are held at the Galleria Nazionale d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Rome and in museums in New York, Paris, Brussels, Milan, and Pisa. Two self-portraits are exhibited at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence.
