Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since classical antiquity, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been one of the main objectives of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, transcending all eras and stylistic movements. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations characteristic of the Renaissance and various forms of classicism, which aim for a faithful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic conceptions introduced by the historical avant-gardes, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
Sergio Vellani is an artist specializing in printmaking, in which the human body, and the female figure in particular, is often the protagonist, becoming the subject of the artist's profound research. This study is conducted with a view toward formal synthesis, exploring the very essence of the subject while simultaneously highlighting its formal qualities. In this sense, we can appreciate how the artist reduces sensory details and physiognomic description to achieve an absolutely objective image, conveying meanings broader than those of an individual portrait. Furthermore, this image is constructed primarily through color, which plays a decidedly structural role. It is, in fact, the density of the application and the layering of color on different planes that enhance the plastic qualities of the figure and the space in which it is set, despite the absence of a drawn structure. In this way, using a highly expressive language, the artist can emphasize the complex torsion of the body in a movement that highlights its plasticity. The use of a bold black line, which creates deep shadows, is also fundamental.
The artist Sergio Vellani was born in Carpi in 1918 and always lived and worked in Bologna. Most of his pictorial production saw him engaged in the reproduction of female figures or the theme of horses in motion. This gave him the opportunity to conduct a profound research into the formal synthesis of the human body or figures in motion. A synthesis that, in Sergio Vellani's artistic practice, perfectly combines the need for a highly expressive artistic language with the enhancement of plastic qualities. Sergio Vellani was a master, above all, of printmaking techniques. His works are held in the museums of Carpi and Montecatini Terme.
