Description of the work
Description of the work
A noble animal, a symbol of beauty and harmony, the horse has repeatedly been a prominent subject in the history of art. Since the fourteenth century, its presence has always been obligatory in battle scenes and equestrian monuments, and painters have always found it a challenge to depict it with anatomical precision and naturalistic rendering.
Although silkscreen printing presents a less complex iconography than Sergio Vacchi's easel work, the painter's graphic quality remains undiminished in creating his elegant and artificial images. The key element is the black line, with which the painter skillfully constructs figures with plasticity and elongated proportions. The subjects' volumetric consistency is further enhanced by hatching and glazes, creating a perfect interplay of light and shadow.
Sergio Vacchi was born in Castenaso in 1925 and passed away in Siena in 2016. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Bologna and his work was promoted by the Il Milione gallery. In 1959, he moved to Rome, entering a circle that allowed him to achieve international fame. Initially informal, his style shifted to surreal and expressionist figuration from the 1950s onwards.
