Serafino Carbone - Study

The painting depicts a landscape scene dominated by water and rural architecture. At the center of the composition are two clusters of old farmhouses perched on the banks of a waterway (a river or canal).

Carbone uses a highly textured mixed technique, especially evident in the rendering of the house walls and the rock in the foreground on the right. The skillful use of the palette knife creates depth and texture, giving the buildings an almost sculptural solidity.

• Light and Color: The painting plays on a strong atmospheric contrast. The dark sky and somber tones of the vegetation make the warm light (yellow and orange) that strikes the roofs and facades of the houses stand out, creating a suspended atmosphere, typical of a moment before or after a thunderstorm.

• Composition: The perspective is guided by the waterway that cuts through the scene, perfectly balancing the group of houses on the left with the one on the right. The reflection in the water vertically elongates the shapes, lending harmony and a sense of quiet to the scene.
