Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject reflects the characteristics of the Vedutismo movement. Vedutismo is a genre that originated in the 18th century and developed primarily in Venice. Vedutisti aimed to represent a landscape in an objective and scientific manner, making it the protagonist of the work. Fundamentally, there are two types of vedute: the realistic one, captured exactly as it is in reality, and the “capriccio,” a fantasy view invented by the painter. In this work, we are faced with a beautiful example of Roman Vedutismo with a typical scene of romantic, picturesque, and arcadian taste, in which ancient ruins are immersed in the landscape of a rustic and pastoral countryside. The artist who created this landscape shows that he is very attached to the tradition of Vedutismo. The work, in fact, seems to reflect this tradition already in the composition, with a scenographic framing that includes a vast portion of the landscape. But it is above all the execution method that is consistent with Vedutismo: the artist uses a cursive, fast stroke, which briefly outlines the details and lets their recomposition happen in the observer's eye. The author manages to blend the forms into the atmosphere, constructing the objects through a thin stroke that outlines the contours and, subsequently, softening them, letting the light flood the entire scene. The entire pictorial space thus appears unified in a perfect twilight atmosphere where the objects in the foreground appear in a suggestive penumbra, while slivers of light measure the landscape that disappears in the distance. From the analysis of the style, a cursive and fast stroke, and the subject, a lyrical landscape, the artist who created the work can be defined as a continuator of the tradition of Roman Vedutismo. We are therefore faced with a painter endowed with a solid academic training, from which he was provided with a remarkable technique that allows him to obtain a perfect naturalistic and atmospheric rendering.
