Description of the work
Description of the work
The representation of animals in art has ancient origins, dating back to prehistoric cave paintings. For religious reasons, various types of animals appear in the records of different ancient civilizations. It is especially during the Middle Ages, within the International Gothic style, that depictions of animals spread as true-to-life portraits, both within artworks and in sketchbooks. The presence of animals as subjects in art will remain constant through to the contemporary era. In this bas-relief, the animal subject combines with that of a genre scene, meeting another theme very widespread in Art History, namely that of the hunting scene.
The bas-relief demonstrates the artist's great technical ability, resulting from their mastery of an excellent technique. The scene was designed to achieve a high degree of naturalistic rendering. This is already apparent from the creation of the composition, which is arranged according to a rational perspective that regulates sizes in a natural way. The deer, the protagonist, appears in the center of the scene, surrounded in a mirrored and symmetrical fashion by the two dogs attacking it. The inclination toward a naturalistic rendering means that the animals are described in a very realistic manner in their anatomical structures and movements. Completing the picture, of course, is the landscape background that creates plant backdrops of trees that increase the depth of the scene. The artist's skill lies entirely in knowing how to modulate the metal material and create different levels of relief in order to realize a natural space in perfect perspective.
The artist Sauro Cavalini has a very classical and traditional conception of artistic creation. His works are based on a perfect naturalistic rendering, the achievement of which is possible thanks to his refined technique and solid academic training.
