Description of the work
Description of the work
The human figure has always been at the center of artistic research. Since the classical age, the naturalistic rendering of human anatomy has been a primary goal of painters and sculptors throughout history. The representation of the nude is the ultimate expression of this aspiration, pervasive across all eras and stylistic trends. Indeed, in addition to the naturalistic interpretations of the Renaissance and various classicisms, which aimed for a truthful and detailed representation of the human body, the nude has also been a central theme in the new aesthetic concepts brought about by the historical avant-garde movements, such as Cubism, Expressionism, and Surrealism.
For Sandro Trotti, the human body is the fulcrum from which his works develop. The artist is driven by the desire to investigate and, therefore, represent the body in all its aspects. In this series of drawings, Trotti allows his expressionistic nature to prevail. Thus, the depiction becomes synthetic and, almost brutally, the figure is reduced to a few essential lines. The graphic line is extremely nervous and, with its broken progression, breaks down reality into different planes to further explore the subject.
Sandro Trotti was born in Monte Urano in 1934. He trained in Rome, where he studied with Purificato, Fazzini, Monachesi, and Cagli. He began as a photographer, then moved to monochromes and finally turned to figurative art with a structural use of color. In the 1970s, he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome and exhibited his work both in Italy and abroad. He was a longtime ambassador for Italian art, particularly in China, and taught at the Beijing Academy.
