Description of the work
Description of the work
The iconography of this work is inspired by a conscious classicist quotation. The artistic language draws on classical antiquity, both Greek and Roman, as well as its revival during the Renaissance. This translates into an execution whose primary goal is mimesis, or the human need to imitate and reproduce nature, the world around us. Along with naturalistic rendering, the other fundamental concept, according to the parameters of Classicism, is the unity of the work of art, through a harmonious correspondence between all its parts.
In this bas-relief, Salvatore Fiume draws inspiration from classical culture, resulting in a quest for naturalism and compositional balance. The entire composition is thoughtful, with the two figures mirroring each other, adhering to the principles of harmony and symmetry. The bodies of the two subjects have a sculptural consistency, their muscles are anatomically prominent, and despite the work's small size, the artist manages to give even the faces a physiognomic appearance.
Salvatore Fiume, born in 1915 in Comiso, was a painter, sculptor, and architect. His career as a painter focused on a reinterpretation of classicism, particularly Renaissance painting and Piero della Francesca. Later, thanks to his success, he traveled extensively around the world, drawing inspiration from exotic folklore, which he rendered with an expressionist touch.
