Description of the work
Description of the work
Surrealist aesthetics emerged around the 1920s and encompassed all areas of artistic research. As far as a discussion more properly related to the visual arts is concerned, surrealism is defined by the desire to explore the human subconscious and pour it into the work of art through a process of automatic writing based on dream analysis. Consequently, surrealist works of art present the depiction of a dreamlike dimension, completely dissociated from reality. However, this representation often relies on a formal rendering of a hyperrealistic nature, precisely to accentuate, paradoxically, the illusory and ambiguous character of the surreal dimension.
The work is a typical example of the Catalan master's mass production, in which we see, from a formal point of view, a more pronounced technical experimentation. Indeed, compared to the hyperrealism that characterizes his major canvas production, the small format of the prints allows Dalí to try out ever-new compositional techniques, which makes this type of work extremely interesting. In this case, we can see how the surrealist subject was achieved by combining figurative elements with purely painterly interventions. Indeed, the door, which in its architectural lines seems to echo Hispano-Moresque architecture, is achieved through overlapping chromatic patches, almost informal in their execution. The indefinite character further accentuates the visionary element of the scene which, therefore, definitively enters the territory of the dreamlike, a dimension favored by Dalí. The mystery is also fueled by the presence of the three birds and their hierarchical arrangement. The execution of the three animals is achieved through a lively rendering that respects their naturalistic appearance.
Salvador Dalí, (Figueres 1904-1989). Major representative of historical Surrealism, he was not only a painter but also a photographer, writer, and filmmaker (his collaboration with Luis Buñuel is famous). His works are based on the criteria of psychoanalytic association, according to the teachings of André Breton. His style is characterized by a swollen, hard Hyperrealism, in which the subjects present a maniacal attention to detail. His compositions are a mix of free associations, biomorphic organisms, and cultural citations.
