Description of the work
Description of the work
Landscape has always played a leading role in artistic research, both as a setting and a backdrop, but also as a subject in its own right. The naturalistic description of landscape has been one of the greatest aspirations for artists of every era. Each historical period has given its own interpretation of landscape, contributing to the evolution of its description: first with a research into space, through Brunelleschian perspective in the early Renaissance; then on the rendering of atmosphere in the sixteenth century; up to the representation of every single vibration of light on objects in Impressionism.
Romano Mussolini's paintings have an artistic language that is always very recognizable, even when he abandons his favorite subject, namely the clown. The figures are outlined with a marked contour, while the application of color is always light, sometimes even reaching an accentuated pictorialism with very expressionistic effects. When he dedicates himself to landscape painting, as in this case, Mussolini seeks characteristic views, full of their own lyricism. Hence, therefore, the taste for the picturesque glance, for the suggestive framing. On a formal level, all this resolves in a very loose and dynamic pictorial approach that guarantees freshness and immediacy of execution. His brushwork, therefore, is characterized by a remarkably cursive touch, made of sudden flashes, effective in recording the light vibrations on objects, even in a leaden and dark atmosphere like in this view. We can see it above all in the reflections reverberated by the body of water. The entire composition is pervaded by a calm realism and a freshness deriving from the artist's technical ability.
Romano Mussolini was born in Forlì in 1927 and passed away in Rome in 2006. An essentially figurative painter who dedicated himself above all to genre subjects such as clowns, horses, or landscapes. His compositions show a simplicity of lines and color. The passion for painting was born already in 1945 in Naples when, under the guidance of the painters Corrura and Terraccini, he immediately obtained good results. Romano Mussolini, in addition to his pictorial production, was also famous as a jazz musician and composer.
