Description of the work
Description of the work
Since the 19th century, when painting began to explore various aspects of bourgeois life, the circus world has been a theme explored by various artists. During the 1970s and 1980s, it became a true genre, practiced by many painters, who focused their attention primarily on the figure of the clown.
In this painting, Romano Mussolini combines a landscape composition with one of his circus characters, in this case a melancholic harlequin. The artist's style is always based on a light expressionism that, with just a few touches of color, manages to synthesize the figures. The entire painting is constructed on delicate transparencies.
Romano Mussolini, born in Forlì in 1927 and died in 2006, was a primarily figurative painter who focused primarily on genre subjects such as clowns, horses, and landscapes. His compositions display a simplicity of line and color.
