ROMANO MUSSOLINI - FREE HORSES

A noble animal and a symbol of beauty and harmony, the horse has repeatedly been a leading subject in art history. Since the fourteenth century, it has always been a staple in battle scenes and equestrian monuments, and for painters, depicting it with anatomical precision and naturalistic rendering has always been a challenge.

Romano Mussolini’s paintings have always had a highly recognizable artistic language, even when he moved away from his favorite subject, the clown. The figures are clearly outlined, while the paint is applied lightly, sometimes resulting in an accentuated painterly style with highly expressionistic effects. In this way, the figures almost seem to lose their substance on a two-dimensional surface, creating a sense of extreme lightness. Formally, this all resolves into a very fluid and dynamic painterly approach that ensures freshness and immediacy of execution. His brushwork, therefore, is characterized by a notably cursive touch, made up of sudden flourishes that effectively capture the play of light on objects. The entire composition is imbued with a quiet realism and a freshness derived from the artist’s technical skill.

Romano Mussolini was born in Forlì in 1927 and passed away in Rome in 2006. An essentially figurative painter, he devoted himself primarily to genre subjects such as clowns, horses, and landscapes. His compositions display a simplicity of line and color. His passion for painting began in Naples in 1945, where, under the guidance of the painters Corrura and Terraccini, he achieved good results right away. Romano Mussolini was famous not only for his paintings but also as a jazz musician and composer.
