Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
Romano Conversano is a painter who has focused primarily on female figures throughout his career. In this watercolor, he offers a concise and minimalist interpretation that harnesses the expressive power of color. The color, applied with broad brushstrokes and positioned on different levels, structures the woman's face, characterizing it physiognomically and expressively.
Romano Conversano was born in 1920 in Rovinj, Istria, and died in 2010 in Milan. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Venice. After the war, he lived for several years in Rovereto, where he animated the city's cultural life. He traveled to Spain, France, and Flanders, places that inspired his art. In the 1950s, he lived between Milan and Peschici and devoted himself to female portraits, juxtaposing the "Women of Today" and "Ancient Puglia."
