Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject to which Rolando Nicodemi feels most drawn is certainly that of still life, in which the painter depicts inanimate objects that usually belong to the natural world: baskets of fruit, flowers, and even objects that can be linked to everyday life, in their stillness. The genre experienced a revival in the seventeenth century, not only serving to enhance painting but also to convey certain philosophical concepts. This tendency to reflect on the pictorial and philosophical conception of paintings leads us to twentieth-century Metaphysical art, in which numerous artists explored human existence through art. Carlo Carrà, Giorgio Morandi, and especially Filippo de Pisis appear to have been Nicodemi’s masters, the painter who, in more recent times, was able to translate the plastic lessons that accompany a return to order and color.
The tones of this painting skillfully and intelligently define the contours of the pomegranates, which are accompanied by a bunch of grapes. The composition is sparse, allowing the natural elements to prevail. The painter’s hand embraces the lightness of his style, finding in this representation a new form of support as well. The natural elements are highly pronounced here, yet at the same time they are linked to the strong metaphysical ideas that the Bolognese masters transmitted to the painter. The almost unsettling stillness of the objects is expressed in a painting that creates a beautiful dichotomy between light and shadow.
The artist Rolando Nicodemi was born in Ferrara in 1922 and died in his hometown in 2014. The characteristics of Rolando Nicodemi’s painting are certainly rooted in twentieth-century plastic art, where movements such as Metaphysical art emerged and rediscovered the conceptual essence of still life.
