Rolando Conti - Madonna

This Madonna by Rolando Conti revisits a very famous subject of Italian Renaissance art, the Madonna and Child with Angels by Filippo Lippi, also known as the Lippina. The work has been dated to 1465 and is housed in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The painting is highly popular because the Madonna's features are thought to resemble those of Lucrezia Buti, a nun and lover of Filippo Lippi, who, it should be remembered, was also a friar. The Lippina is a cornerstone of fifteenth-century art as it served as a prototype for the female portrait for many later painters, Sandro Botticelli in particular. Rolando Conti, in his work, reproduces the detail of the head.

Rolando Conti's interpretation of Lippi's prototype is fully respectful of the aesthetic canons of the fifteenth-century Renaissance. First, he expresses the figure in a solid drawing, which delineates the volume with marked plasticity. Thus, the head achieves geometric perfection (in the best tradition of the fifteenth-century Italian Renaissance) and, at the same time, highlights the complex drapery of the veil. Rolando Conti respectfully captures, in his interpretation, the grace typical of Filippo Lippi's Madonnas thanks to his excellent technique for reproducing sensory details, which we also find in many of his works dedicated to animals. Even in his application of color, the Carrara painter demonstrates his excellence with brushstrokes composed of delicate glazes, designed to create a soft complexion, nuanced by subtle shadows. Finally, the colors are equally in keeping with tradition: vibrant, brilliant, and full of light, they reflect the preciousness typical of fifteenth-century Italian painting.

Rolando Conti was born in Carrara in 1956 and passed away recently in July 2020. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in his hometown and then attended a restoration course at the Bishop's Palace in Massa. His painting was based on the study of the Italian painting tradition, especially the Renaissance, but Rolando Conti's career was characterized by a relentless exploration that manifested itself in his profoundly eclectic production. His works are held in numerous collections, both in Italy and abroad. Rolando Conti also created altarpieces for various churches between La Spezia and Forte dei Marmi and several book covers for Francesco Alberoni.
