Rolando Conti - Madonna

This Madonna by Rolando Conti revisits a very famous subject in Italian Renaissance art, Filippo Lippi's Madonna with Child and Angels, also known as the Lippina. The work was dated to 1465 and is kept at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. The painting is very popular because the features of the Madonna are said to resemble those of Lucrezia Buti, a nun and lover of Filippo Lippi who, we recall, was also a friar. The Lippina is a cornerstone of Quattrocento art as it constituted a prototype for female portraiture for many subsequent painters, Sandro Botticelli in particular. In his work, Rolando Conti reinterprets the detail of the head.

Rolando Conti's interpretation of the Lippesque prototype fully respects the aesthetic canons of the Quattrocento Renaissance. First of all, he expresses the figure in a solid drawing, which outlines the volume with a marked plasticism. In this way, the head has a geometric perfection (as in the best tradition of the Italian Renaissance Quattrocento) and, at the same time, the complex drapery of the veil is highlighted. Rolando Conti is respectful in rendering, in his interpretation, the typical grace of Filippo Lippi's Madonnas thanks to his excellent technique in reproducing sensitive details, which we also find in many of his works dedicated to animals. Also in the application of color, the Carrara painter demonstrates his excellence with a brushstroke made of delicate glazes, aimed at giving life to a soft and shaded complexion with subtle shading. Finally, the colors are equally in line with tradition: vivid, brilliant and full of light, they echo the preciousness typical of Italian Quattrocento painting.

Rolando Conti was born in Carrara in 1956 and recently passed away in July 2020. He trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in his city and then attended a restoration course at the Episcopal Palace of Massa. His pictorial approach was based on the study of the Italian pictorial tradition, especially the Renaissance, but Rolando Conti's career was characterized by an incessant search that manifested itself in his deeply eclectic production. His works are kept in numerous collections, both in Italy and abroad. Furthermore, Rolando Conti executed altarpieces for various churches between La Spezia and Forte dei Marmi and several covers for the books of Francesco Alberoni.
