Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject depicted and the artist's interpretation suggest a satirical intent against bourgeois society and its hypocrisies. The composition has a highly ironic and mocking tone.
The work clearly intends to ridicule the hypocritical morality of our society's ruling classes. It's no coincidence that representatives of religious, political, and military power appear contemplating the undressed woman. There's also a clear critique of the use of the woman's body as an object to be exhibited. Pelagatti's pictorial language is entirely geared toward biting irony: the composition is deliberately childish and flat, the subjects are caricatured, and their dull expressions inspire a sense of emptiness.
The language used in this painting by Pelagatti has strong connections with the German New Objectivity movement. It displays the same simplified and childlike interpretation of a realism based on a marked plasticity. We find the same cynical nature of painters like George Grosz and Otto Dix in lashing out at their own society with lucid irony.
