Description of the work
Description of the work
The bull in art is a subject with ancient origins, appearing even in primitive cave paintings. For religious reasons, it also frequently appears in the works of ancient civilizations, particularly the Minoan-Cretan civilization. In contemporary art, Picasso's studies of the bull are famous.
Montanari's style is essentially figurative, but tends to transcend naturalism and embrace expressionistic simplification. This bull (a recurring subject in the Ravenna-born painter's work) is also composed according to the rules of perfect naturalism. The figure is well-defined in volume and coherently inserted into its decontextualized space. The artist demonstrates excellent graphic technique in constructing the subject with fine hatching that highlights all the light reflections on its tawny coat.
Roberto Montanari (Ravenna 1937 - Vicenza 2017) trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ravenna and was a disciple of Salvador Dalí. He exhibited his work in over 250 shows and in the 1970s participated in group exhibitions with Dalí and Picasso. His most recurring subject is the bull, always depicted in scenes enlivened by warm sunlight, hence the nickname "the bull painter."
