Roberto Baldassarini - A Moment of Rest

Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.

This work is part of a series of portraits by Roberto Baldassarini, depicting ordinary, working-class people through a profoundly poetic realist artistic language. These canvases extol the simplicity of everyday life, where the painter finds a spirituality even in their small gestures that he seeks to capture on canvas. Technically, this also translates formally into a realist intent. The subjects and the environments in which they move are rendered completely naturalistically. The figures have a tangible sense of volume; we can feel the weight of their bodies. From a physiognomic perspective, the artist's precision in detail is remarkable, expressing his realist nature to the fullest. The brushstrokes, depending on the situation, can be more precise, but in some details the painter opts for a more lively and impressionistic touch. Light plays a key role, skillfully managed to create interplays of shadows on the subjects.

Roberto Baldassarini, the artist behind this series of portraits, was born in 1925. The artist displays a remarkable and solid academic training. He is a painter with a strong grasp of compositional drawing, which he uses to create the structure of his dipoint paintings. In this way, Baldassarini manages to create subjects with a sculptural consistency and detailed facial features. In short, the artist possesses a technique that allows him to achieve a remarkable naturalistic rendering. His poetics leans toward a realistic depiction of simple subjects taken from everyday life.
