Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject of the equestrian monument, or the man on horseback, has very ancient origins. It dates back even to the classical world, and the oldest example is the “Rampin Rider,” a masterpiece of archaic Greek art. In Roman art, the equestrian monument was of fundamental importance, also from a political point of view. Generally, these are free-standing sculptures, but there are cases in which this subject appears on painted supports or in genre prints. The theme of the man on horseback has run through the entire history of art, not only Western art, and became a subject of study for contemporary artists such as Marino Marini, Arturo Martini, or Aligi Sassu.
The print was created for a nobly didactic purpose, and for this reason, its execution unfolds in a refined drawing that presents every detail with meticulous precision. The author perfectly describes both the clothing and the tack, but also every single element of the vegetation and the landscape. There is a conventional and idealized character, typical of this genre of illustrations. An idealization that can be found in the statuesque forms of the horse and rider and in their courtly attitudes. The shadows were created with very fine hatching and nevertheless lend a certain vitality to an illustrative work. The hand-coloring is an added value to this already very remarkable work.
The engraving was taken from Johann Elias Redinger, born in Ulm in 1698 and passed away in Augsburg in 1767. He was a renowned engraver specializing in reproductions of animals, equestrian groups, and hunting scenes. He distinguished himself for his excellent didactic realism and the refinement of his technique in creating illustrations.
