Description of the work
Description of the work
The subject can be defined as a genre scene, that is, the representation of an episode of everyday life that, apparently, has no significant elements. This type of domestic subject matter was long considered minor and only began to spread in Western art from the 17th century onwards. It was only with the development of 19th-century realist movements that everyday subjects were considered to be of the same importance as historical or religious ones.
Renzo Mercatini's style shows the same deliberate naivety typical of a naive painter. This can be inferred from the spontaneity with which he approaches his subject, but also from the choice to represent an everyday scene of a humble existence. However, Mercatini's belonging to the Labro environment is also evident, where the influence of post-Macchiaioli art is strong. In Mercatini, we can notice this in the post-impressionist pictorial application, especially on the surface of the water.
Renzo Mercatini was born in Chianni in 1924 and passed away in Livorno in 1984. He is a painter who demonstrates a naive attitude towards his subjects, which are often genre scenes inspired by the lives of the humble. However, his technique has a certain post-impressionist tendency with some symbolist touches in the use of color.
