Description of the work
Description of the work
Portraiture is one of the most widespread artistic expressions, especially in painting, but also in sculpture, throughout the ages. Portraiture is, first and foremost, a description of the subject depicted, an attempt to capture their physiognomy and individual characteristics truthfully and naturally. With the progressive evolution of artistic research, the physiognomic description of the subject has also been accompanied by a psychological one. Therefore, over the centuries, portraiture has also become a means of introspective investigation of the subject, their character, and their state of mind. The processes of abstraction brought about by contemporary art have contributed to this type of investigation.
This portrait is highly illustrative of Domenico Purificato's artistic language. The artist always straddles the line between unfiltered realism and a kind of idealized symbolism. While the subject, as is typical in Purificato's art, is a humble figure of working-class extraction, the painter, in portraying him, exerts unnaturalistic pressures that simplify the figure, making it more iconic and symbolic. In this drawing, Purificato uses a very light line, full of nuances that lend dynamism to the work's surface. The artist's skill and refined perception are evident when, with just a few stylized strokes, he manages to convey a subject with its own physiognomy and personality onto the sheet of paper. The figure's gesture of bowing its head is also very elegant and natural.
Domenico Purificato was born in Fondi in 1915 and died in Rome in 1984. His artistic career began in Rome in 1936, coinciding with his time as editor of the magazine "Cinema." He participated in six Rome Quadrennials and four Venice Biennials. He was also director of the Brera Academy until 1980. His style is a neorealism inspired by the working classes. He also collaborated with the director De Sanctis.
